Mesmerising free light park has opened: Is Budapest ready for Valentine’s Day? — photos

A one-of-a-kind free light park, together with a vibrant seasonal programme offering numerous free events, awaits families during the Advent season in City Park.

Budapest’s City Park more spectacular in the Advent period
According to a statement from Városliget Ltd, sent to MTI on Monday, the most spectacular Advent period in the park’s history began on the final weekend of November. Its centrepiece is a breathtaking collection of light installations surrounding the Millennium House.
The festive heart of City Park focuses on the Millennium House and its immediate vicinity, where visitors are welcomed by an exquisitely crafted and striking light display. Arrivals are guided through the Rose Garden, passing into a magical tunnel of lights, with the ambience enhanced by a rose arbour densely draped in twinkling fairy lights.

The park also reimagines one of its most popular attractions, the BalloonFly lookout tower, in an inventive manner: a miniature balloon, richly embellished with Christmas lights and decorations, evokes the thrill of floating. The Advent décor is further complemented by the Zsolnay Fountain glowing in its winter attire, offering a spectacular sight for visitors.
Free-of-charge programmes in the light park
The programme highlights that more than two dozen events will take place across eight locations in the park during the Advent season, including communal carol singing, Christmas storytelling performances, and the ever-popular Santa-themed orienteering run.
City Park’s cultural institutions—such as the House of Hungarian Music, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the ResoArt Villa and the Millennium House—join this year’s festivities with an especially varied array of holiday events designed to captivate families in the run-up to Christmas.

Alongside the festive experiences, the park’s eateries—from Pavilion Garden to the Airship Garden—invite visitors with seasonal treats and classic dishes, creating a full sensory experience.
Modern, lively, family-friendly
The Liget Budapest Project has emphasised the renewal and enhancement of the park’s event offerings, and this year’s Advent season reflects that vision to perfection.
Today, City Park stands as one of the capital’s most modern, vibrant and family-friendly destinations, where festive traditions blend effortlessly with its 21st-century character.

Thanks to the park’s redevelopment, this year’s comprehensive holiday programme is remarkable even by international standards. Visitors can enjoy the long-standing traditions of the historic City Park Ice Rink alongside the atmospheric Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Vajdahunyad Castle—all within a single location.

These classic experiences are elevated to contemporary heights by the world-class cultural institutions created under the Liget Budapest Project: the Ethnographic Museum, the House of Hungarian Music, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Millennium House. These venues are not only architectural masterpieces but also enrich the Advent atmosphere with a diverse range of festive events.
