Budapest’s iconic Funicular and Chairlift launch new ticket system: Discounts included!

The Budapest Transport Company (BKV) has announced that, starting 1 February, the ticketing systems for the Budavári Funicular (Budavári Sikló) and the Zugligeti Chairlift (Zugligeti Lebegő) will be revamped, offering a clearer range of options and new discounts, the company told the Hungarian News Agency on Friday.
Single and return tickets make a comeback
According to the announcement, single-ride tickets are returning, while two-way and return options will remain available. Additionally, Hungarian residents with a registered address card can now purchase discounted “Itthoni” (Domestic) tickets for the Funicular.

Half-price domestic tickets for the Funicular
From February, Domestic tickets for the Budavári Funicular will be available at roughly half price. These tickets can be purchased at the Funicular’s ticket offices upon presenting a Hungarian address card. A return ticket covers one uphill and one downhill journey, while a single ticket is valid for a trip in either direction.

Understanding ticket differences on the Chairlift
On the Zugligeti Chairlift, a single ticket is valid for one ride, while a two-way ticket can be used for two journeys in any direction. This explains why the terminology for two-way and return tickets differs between the two services.

Combined Funicular + Boat tickets still available
Combined “Funicular + Boat” tickets will continue to be sold, valid for use on both the Budavári Funicular and sightseeing boats for 30 days from the date of purchase, the company added.
