Budapest is undoubtedly a popular holiday destination – but would you have thought that the Hungarian capital is one of the most crowded cities in the world? According to research by a holiday company, Budapest “won” a place on the list of the world’s most crowded cities. Is your experience similar?

More and more we hear that some places are introducing rules to reduce the number of tourists. Overtourism is an existing phenomenon that makes the lives of people living in these places increasingly difficult.

As Travelo reports, a holiday company has researched which destinations have the highest visitor numbers in relation to the population per square kilometre.

The official list of the world’s most crowded cities is dominated by European capitals, and Budapest is one of the world’s most congested cities. Perhaps less surprisingly, Paris has become the most congested city on the planet. With 351,429 visitors per square kilometre and a visitor rate of 1,708%, the French capital is by far the most crowded destination, timeout.com writes.

Bern came second. The Swiss city boasts 85,045 visitors per square kilometre, the highest number of visitors per square kilometre in relation to the population. The third place was taken by Chicago. See the top 10 most crowded cities below!

The Hungarian capital often pops up on top lists. For instance, as we reported a few days ago, according to Világgazdaság, the Budapest Beer Week was voted the 3rd best craft beer festival in Europe. With this, the Budapest event, which has been held since 2018, has overtaken legendary events with a long history, such as the four-day Portuguese Artbeerfest Caminha and the Italian Arrogant Sour Festival.

  1. B.S. Parts maybe yes: Deak Ference ter and the surrounding area are a nightmare to navigate but I never found the city to feel claustrophobic, which, for something of a grumbling misanthrope like me (LOL!), is saying something!
