Budapest became one of the most crowded cities in the world!
Budapest is undoubtedly a popular holiday destination – but would you have thought that the Hungarian capital is one of the most crowded cities in the world? According to research by a holiday company, Budapest “won” a place on the list of the world’s most crowded cities. Is your experience similar?
More and more we hear that some places are introducing rules to reduce the number of tourists. Overtourism is an existing phenomenon that makes the lives of people living in these places increasingly difficult.
As Travelo reports, a holiday company has researched which destinations have the highest visitor numbers in relation to the population per square kilometre.
The official list of the world’s most crowded cities is dominated by European capitals, and Budapest is one of the world’s most congested cities. Perhaps less surprisingly, Paris has become the most congested city on the planet. With 351,429 visitors per square kilometre and a visitor rate of 1,708%, the French capital is by far the most crowded destination, timeout.com writes.
Bern came second. The Swiss city boasts 85,045 visitors per square kilometre, the highest number of visitors per square kilometre in relation to the population. The third place was taken by Chicago. See the top 10 most crowded cities below!

Budapest on other lists
Craft beer
The Hungarian capital often pops up on top lists. For instance, as we reported a few days ago, according to Világgazdaság, the Budapest Beer Week was voted the 3rd best craft beer festival in Europe. With this, the Budapest event, which has been held since 2018, has overtaken legendary events with a long history, such as the four-day Portuguese Artbeerfest Caminha and the Italian Arrogant Sour Festival.
This year’s Budapest Beer Week in the capital will run from 20 May to 26 May. The main tasting days of the BPBW 2024 will take place on 24 and 25 May in the Dürer Kert, with the free-to-attend encore day on Sunday 26 May.
Driving
According to one of our recent articles, DiscoverCars.com has conducted new research into which cities cause drivers the most stress. With a Stress Rating of 25.5, Budapest, Hungary falls right in the middle of the ranking. While the city’s roads are generally in good condition, drivers here say parking can be difficult to find.
Hotels
Budapest is famous for its prestigious hotels that tourists love. In April, we reported that 3 Budapest hotels have made it into the top 10 best hotels in the Travelers’ Choice Awards, announced by Tripadvisor: Hotel Moments Budapest was ranked 5th, Hotel Vision Budapest 7th, and Hotel Clark Budapest 8th in the list. What is more, the Maison Bistro & Hotel in Budapest is ranked ninth in Tripadvisor’s recently published Travellers’ Choice Awards, ranking Small & Boutique hotels across Europe.

B.S. Parts maybe yes: Deak Ference ter and the surrounding area are a nightmare to navigate but I never found the city to feel claustrophobic, which, for something of a grumbling misanthrope like me (LOL!), is saying something!
