Budapest spa operator: revamp of historic baths starts, new tickets, passes, price rises, discounts for foreigners

Budapest spa operator BGYH had record revenue of HUF 26.3bn in 2024, the local council-owned company said on Friday. BGYH discussed the revamp of historic baths in Budapest, introducing new tickets, passes, discounts and price rises, some only applicable to foreigners.

Budapest spa operator talks about record revenues, profits

Revenue climbed from HUF 23bn in 2023. After-tax profit rose to HUF 6.2bn (EUR 15.14 million) from HUF 5bn. Results were supported by higher entry fees, adjusted to international norms, but still at the low end of the price range for historical European baths, BGYH said. It added that significant discounts were available to Hungarians.

For 2025, BGYH targets guest numbers close to 4 million, a fraction under the number in 2024 due to spa renovations. Revenue is expected to fall by HUF 237m.

Another price rise for foreign nationals

According to turizmus.com, 2024 was a preparatory year when the BGYH finished the planning of high-volume investments concerning the complex renewal of Budapest’s historic baths. Among those baths, they mentioned the Gellért, Rác and Széchenyi baths.

Entrance ticket prices grew by an average of 5% in January. However, BGYH plans a price correction concerning baths visited by foreign nationals, like the Széchenyi, Gellért, Lukács, and Rudas baths. The price correction will come into effect in June or July, following international trends. Meanwhile, BGYH plans to offer increasing discounts for the Budapesters.

Here are the discounts

They said that the Zsigmondy Club Card remained popular in 2024, and there were 22 thousand members in December. The card costs HUF 5,000 (EUR 12.21), is valid for one year and provides a 60% discount for entering the Gellért, Széchenyi and Rudas baths. An even more beneficial scheme for Hungarians is the pass system, which was renewed years ago. Pass prices went up by an average of 5% this year.

Based on the decisions of the municipal council, the discount system will be expanded with elements benefiting Budapesters and students living and studying in the capital. From 1 April, students living or studying in Budapest can receive a 50% discount if they have a monthly Budapest public transport pass.

Seniors and early hours

They will introduce new entrance tickets: morning passes will enable you to enter five times in the early hours, while you may get a 50% discount 2 hours before the closure of the bath. Furthermore, pensioners can also buy discounted tickets for workday mornings for -50%.
