Budapest university conquers the world
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published its 2025 World University Rankings, with BME in an even higher position, continuing its upward trend from the past two years, bme.hu wrote.
There are over 20,000 institutions of higher education worldwide, and the London-based analyst has evaluated more than 5600 of them, with only 1503 making the final list, released on Tuesday evening. Hungary is represented by 11 universities.
BME has moved up once again: it now ranks 721-730th compared to last year’s 741-750th, continuing its upward trajectory from the 801-1000th range between 2019 and 2023. With this result, BME ranks 4th in Hungary in the QS rankings, preceded only by ELTE, the University of Szeged, and the University of Debrecen.
Highest score for international research network
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has topped the list for the 13th consecutive year. Imperial College London has risen four places to secure the second position, followed by the University of Oxford and Harvard University. Other top-ranking universities on the list are Cambridge, Stanford, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, UCL, California Institute of Technology.
QS ranks universities based on nine criteria, with BME among the top three in Hungary in several categories: second place for number of citations per faculty and for employer reputation, and third place for graduate job market performance. It also scored highly in academic reputation, international research network, and sustainability.
Notably, the university received its highest score for its international research network, highlighting its extensive global collaborations and the worldwide reach of its research. BME received its highest rank for employer reputation, climbing 95 places to 369th globally.
The only Hungarian university in this category
In April 2024, QS already published a ranking in which BME moved up in several categories: in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 10 April, BME was listed in the faculty area of engineering as the only Hungarian higher education institution, ranked 243rd.
In the broad faculty area of Natural Sciences, BME has moved up from last year’s rank of 401-450 to the current position of 377. This year, BME has entered two new rankings for the first time: Social Sciences & Management (ranked 501-550) and Environmental Sciences (510-520), expanding its total disciplinary rankings to three in broad faculty areas and twelve in narrow subject areas.
