Budapest’s only free, open-air, sandy Danube beach opened today!
Budapest’s so-called Roman Beach (Római Plázs) is open for bathers from today. It is the capital’s only Danube beach for free, and it will be open until 20 August. It will be open between 10 AM and 7 PM, but bathers should comply with the strict safety measures.
According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, Plázs is the only natural bathing place in Budapest where visitors do not have to pay an entrance fee. That is what 3rd district locals voted to uphold in a referendum. 95% of the people supported the Plázs, where authorities regularly monitor water quality.
Before the beach’s opening, authorities conducted a strict examination and cleaning of the water, the sand, and the riverbed.
Drinking water, diaper changing and shower rooms, coloured sunbeds, and bike parking places remain free this year. However, there are strict rules for bathing. For example, people can swim only in an area marked by buoys and between 10 AM and 7 PM.
