By beating Larvik 26-22, Buducnost Podgorica won women’s handball Budapest Champion League’s Final Four final. The Norwegian team caught up from a nine-goal handicap in the end, but they had no chance to draw. Buducnost won the trophy for the second time after 2012, nemzetipsort.hu said.
In the prelude, Boyana Popovich tuned the Budu-fans by singing a Montenegrin song. There was no full house; about three-quarters of the places were sold. One-sector Podgorica people were cheering ecstatically, so it was sure they would win the sound duel.
At the beginning, Cristina Neagu was injured due to a wrong move and she went off the field. Despite the candidate of the top-scorer-title was sitting on the bench, Buduscnost started wonderfully with 4-0, and then Nora Mork could score a goal from the Norwegian side, while Dragana Cjivich was ordered off by the Hungarian referees.
For the two goals of Mork, the Montenegro team answered with three and Neagu also scored one – it was her 100th goal in the season – Ole Gustav Gjekstad asked for time at 3-6.
In the 15th minute, Gro Hammerseng-Edin was the first from Larvik who could score a goal besides Mork. The advantage increased by 9-5 for Buducnost, and Kristin Breistol’s goal and Sandra Toft’s amazing defense didn’t bring a turning point. In the break, Buducnost confidently lead to 14-6, nemzetisport.hu said.
Katarina Bulatovic started with a goal in the second half but she was ordered off after 2 minutes. However, even from this, the Podgorica team came out better. In the 38th minute, Buducnost lead by 18-10, so the fate of the trophy was practically decided.
In the 52nd minute, the Norwegians caught up for 4 goals, but they woke up too late, so Budcnost won 26-22.
Before the award ceremony, the new Champions League trophy, which is the work of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design’s students, was lowered from the air. The top-scorer title was shared between Cristina Neagu and Andrea Penezic, both of them reached 102 goals. Clare Woltering was chosen for the most valuable player of the Final Four.
