Chief security advisor: More than 140,000 refugees arrive from Ukraine
More than 140,000 refugees have arrived in Hungary from Ukraine so far, the prime minister’s chief security advisor told public news channel M1 late on Friday.
According to an estimate of the United Nations, this number will likely reach 250,000, György Bakondi said.
The number of refugees will depend on the extent to which the increasingly severe developments in the Russian-Ukrainian war will extend to the western parts of Ukraine, he said.
Hungary’s government considers it its duty to provide protection to people “fleeing the hell of war to the first safe country, which is Hungary,” the chief security advisor said.
Bakondi stressed that Hungary had not waited for the European Union, but had started helping refugees using its own resources, from state and community donations.
