Civil organisations supported by US financier Soros behind teachers’ protest?

Budapest, February 2 (MTI) – Civil organisations supported by Hungarian-born US financier George Soros stand behind the organisers of recent teachers’ protests, news portal pestisracok.hu said on Tuesday.

According to the portal, the organisations Human Platform and Hivatlanul Halozat announced the national teachers’ conference last weekend, which attracted more than a hundred people and the organisers offered to pay for travel expenses of participants arriving from outside Budapest.

Márton Gulyás, who represents Human Platform, used to be a member of Kretakor, which received 35 million forints (EUR 110,000) in 2012 from a foundation financed by Soros, the portal added.

Anna Komjáthy of teachers’ trade union PDSZ told the portal that “it makes me smile when someone says civil groups associated with Soros are stirring trouble in education”.

“There is no political intention behind our actions; we do not want to overthrow the government and we do not want party politics to hijack the demonstration,” she added.
