Conference on space and climate change held in Budapest

The Hungarian Astronautical Society (MANT) organised a conference on space and climate change in Budapest on Friday, the Day of Hungarian Space Research.

Kálmán Kovács, who heads MANT, said the conference was a companion event to World Space Week. Szabolcs Szolnoki, the deputy state secretary for technology at the National Economy Ministry, said new space industry legislation was being drafted with the aim of supporting the development of local suppliers and nurturing “national champions”, initiating missions with the European Space Agency and making full use of the agency’s geographical return system ensuring investments in space programmes are returned in the form of contracts with local industry players.

Krisztián Bodzsár, of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), pointed to challenges posed by the growing number of satellites and said the NMHH planned to upgrade its measurement and monitoring capacity.

Balázs Bartóki-Gönczy, the director of the Institute of Space Law and Politics at the Ludovika University of Public Service, noted that the Draghi report on European competitiveness had recommended a unified European space act and the rollback of favourable procurement regulations for smaller member states.
