Costa Rica considers autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty “the most feasible solution” for resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara

Change language:

The Republic of Costa Rica considered on Friday the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco “the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a political solution,” asserting that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be the most feasible solution for resolving” the regional dispute over the western Sahara.

This position was set forth in the Joint Declaration inked in Rabat following talks between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of the Republic of Costa Rica Mr. Arnoldo André Tinoco, on a working visit to the Kingdom on the 27 march.

In this regard, Costa Rica emphasized its intention “to act on the basis of this position at political, diplomatic, economic, and consular levels.”

In addition, the Republic of Costa Rica, which welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), stressed that it “recognizes the importance the Kingdom of Morocco attaches to the issue of the Sahara,” noting that it is “closely following the current positive momentum on this matter under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”

In the same Joint Declaration, the two ministers reiterated their support for the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, as well as for his efforts to advance the political process toward a definitive resolution of this regional dispute.

Costa Rixa’s stance comes at the very moment when the Republic Czech has asserted supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan and sovereignty over the Sahara following talks on 26 march in Rabat between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka.

Prague also announced that its embassy in Rabat will extend consular services to the Sahara, aligning its diplomatic and consular practices with its position on the issue.

The ambassador of Czech Republic will travel to to the Sahara region (Western Sahara) to prepare visits by Czech entrepreneurs and support joint economic initiatives.

As we wrote earlier, Belgium reaffirms its support also for Morocco’s autonomy plan
