Criminal proceedings launched in the case of the little girl who drowned in Lake Balaton
The police in Veszprém have launched criminal proceedings in the case of the death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who drowned in Lake Balaton last Saturday.
Last Saturday, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl drowned in Lake Balaton at the beach of a local campsite, after arriving from the Czech Republic with her family. The child slipped from a mattress into the water in the late afternoon.
After the incident, dozens of police officers, ambulances, locals and campers were searching for the little girl. She was found at 6 pm, but the rescue unit and medical staff on the scene were unable to save her life.
Water experts regularly remind people that under-age children should only be allowed in the water under strict supervision and weather conditions should also be taken into consideration.
According to the latest news of 24.hu, the police have launched criminal proceedings in the case. The Criminal Investigation Department of the Veszprém County Police Headquarters has ordered an investigation into the case on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence. As it is an ongoing case, no further information has been provided.
Despite lifeguard warnings, many people are breaking the rules and risking their lives at the Hungarian sea. As a result, water police rescued eleven people from Lake Balaton last weekend.
Due to the strong winds caused by the storm, sup-skiers, windsurfers, boats and sailboats can easily drift away. Not to mention people who risk their lives swimming in these conditions. Water rescuers are making a serious effort to help people who still enter the waters despite storm warnings. As the Hungarian news portal Pénzcentrum reports, last year saw record numbers of accidents, fatalities and deaths at Lake Balaton. During this period, 16 people drowned in the Hungarian sea, while water rescuers saved the lives of 410 people in 194 cases.
Experts emphasise that in the heat, you should pay more attention before you enter the waters. Cool your body gradually, do not jump into the water without doing so, and be aware of the risks of sunstroke, sunburn and heatstroke. In addition, families with children should pay extra attention. In this heat, the little ones should wear waterproof sunscreen at all times. Parents should always keep an eye on their children in order to avoid tragic accidents.
