Current trends regarding Hungary’s population decline

Hungary’s population decline was 5.1 percent lower in October this year than a year before but it was 22 percent higher in the first ten months of 2017 than in the same period of 2016, the Central Statistical Office reported on Thursday.

Figures show that there were 557 fewer births and 689 fewer deaths in October this year than in the same period of 2016.

In January-October 2017, there were 76,630 births or 1.2 percent down from the same period a year earlier and 109,428 deaths or 4.9 percent up.

For that matter, the Central Statistical Office’s (KSH) “micro census”, conducted a year ago, has recorded the lowest number of children and the greatest elderly population in the history of such surveys.

The number of marriages fell by an annual 2.5 percent to 46,061 in the first ten months of this year, representing a sudden turn in a trend of growth since 2011.
