Deadly hit-and-runs in Budapest: Massive speed limit coming soon
In terms of population, the highest number of traffic accidents occurred in Vas county in 2022. The fewest happened in Borsod county. Budapest’s leadership aims to reduce road fatalities to zero by 2050.
In 2022, there were 14,732 road traffic accidents involving personal injury in Hungary. Their number was 3.5 percent higher than in 2021. In that year, traffic was lower due to epidemic restrictions. Also, that number was 11 percent lower than in 2019, the last year before the epidemic, according to the Central Statistical Office’s (KSH) “Focus on counties” publication.
According to the summary, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county saw the biggest decrease in the number of traffic accidents, with 10 percent fewer than a year earlier. Only 6 counties saw a decrease in the number of accidents compared to a year earlier. The biggest increase was in Zala county, up 15 percent, Pénzcentrum reports.
In terms of population, the highest number of traffic accidents occurred in Vas County and the lowest in Borsod. Budapest is second in the list in terms of the number of accidents per 10,000 inhabitants.
Injuries, deaths
In the context of the rising number of accidents, a total of 20,056 more people were injured in road accidents in 2022, 4.8 percent more than a year earlier. The biggest increase, 16 percent, was in Zala county. Meanwhile, the biggest decrease, 19 percent, was in Fejér county. According to KSH, 3.2 percent of road accidents last year resulted in death, 29 percent in serious injuries and 68 percent in minor injuries.
The rate of fatal accidents was highest in Bács-Kiskun county: 6.7 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of serious injuries was highest in Fejér and Bács-Kiskun counties, 39 percent in both.
The number of drink-driving accidents fell by 2.5 percent to 1,193, with the highest number of accidents, 167, in the capital.
Speeding fatalities on the rise
The publication shows that the number of fatal accidents due to “inappropriate speed” has increased significantly compared to the same period a year ago. Furthermore, there have been more tragic collisions due to failure to give way. Conversely, there were fewer fatal accidents due to irregular direction changes, overtaking, turning and overtaking than in the last quarter of 2021.
