Disturbing video of the Budapest horror accident: 26-year-old cyclist dead

A car hit a cyclist and then collided with another car on Árpád Bridge shortly after midnight on 1 July 2023. Several people were injured in the accident, the cyclist died in the hospital. Police believe a spontaneous speeding race led to the manslaughter. Now, the police have released the CCTV footage of the accident.

A spontaneous race, rather than a pre-planned one, may have led to the horrific accident on Árpád Bridge, the Budapest Police Headquarters announced at a press conference on Friday, rtl.hu writes.

According to Telex, the following may have happened:

• Two BMWs were driving fast on Róbert Károly Boulevard.
• They met the Mercedes at the red light at the Teve Street intersection.
• The light turned green, all three cars started to accelerate.
• At Árpád Bridge, the Mercedes was in the lead, followed by the two BMWs.
• The Mercedes started to turn left, causing the driver to jerk the steering wheel to the right, hitting a cyclist on the pavement.
• The collision caused the Mercedes to turn upside down. The BMW behind it managed to avoid it, but the second BMW crashed into it at high speed.

The Mercedes was travelling at a speed of at least 137 km/h before the accident. On impact, it broke through the guardrail and hit the cyclist.

According to police, the young man had two limbs torn off at the scene.

The 33-year-old driver of the Mercedes has been hospitalised until now, and was brought in on Friday and his arrest was proposed. The man admitted his crime. The responsibility of the other two drivers is still under investigation.
