Don’t forget to buy your e-vignette in Hungary

There are many things we do not want to be fined for when exercising our right to drive a vehicle on the roads of Hungary. Not having or having an invalid motorway sticker is absolutely one of them. In this article, you will acquire information on where and how to buy your e-vignette in Hungary to make sure you are legally cruising on the country’s roads.
E-vignette in Hungary
Motorway stickers or e-vignettes must be bought before using the toll roads in Hungary. Make sure to get informed on which roads are toll roads before setting off on your journey. It is especially important to buy your motorway stickers before entering the toll roads because you cannot activate your e-vignette retroactively. This means that if you, for some reason, want to buy an e-vignette in Hungary after you already came off the toll road, you will be fined in every case. However, as e-autopalyamatrica.hu writes, bona fide drivers who mistakenly enter a toll section have up to 60 minutes to purchase their e-vignette.
Types of motorway stickers
There are several types of motorway stickers. You can buy a 10-day vignette which is valid from the day given by the customer until the 24th hour of the 10th day. You can choose a monthly e-vignette which gives you more freedom in terms of time: you do not have to worry about it expiring for a while. The vignette is valid from the first day given by the customer until midnight of the same day of the next month. If this day is missing from the calendar in next month, the last day of the month is considered.
An even better option if you frequently use Hungary’s toll roads is purchasing an annual motorway sticker. It is valid from the very first day of the year – no matter when you buy it – until the 24th hour of the very last day of the year. Again, it only allows you to go on toll roads from the time of purchase and not retroactively, whether you buy it in the first days of January or in April.
Transfer of e-vignettes
E-vignettes can be transferred as well. If the ownership of the vehicle is transferred by the owner or if the contract of use is terminated (e.g. wreck, theft), the authorisation for use on the road may be transferred to another vehicle of the same category. In case you want to transfer your e-vignette, you have to contact the Customer Service of the National Toll Payment Services PLC directly.
