3+1 great cafés to study in Budapest
Are you bored of the usual chain coffee shops? Can you study better when you are surrounded by other people also doing their tasks? Here are a few suggestions for places to visit!
Address: Budapest, Dohány u. 13, 1074
Opening hours: Mon–Sat: 11h–21h, Sun: closed
Magvető, one of the best-known publishing houses in Hungary, has its own café. On most evenings the café is full of international students with their laptops and notes. Its minimalistic, cardboard style with lots of books does not allow any distractions for the guests. While you can also come here to have a coffee and chat with your friends, this place is mostly for those who want to study, so peace and quiet is provided most of the time. If you sit on the “stairs”, you can also charge your electronic devices. Compared to other places in Budapest, prices are good even for a student budget. If you can, reserve a place the previous day since this café is quite popular. Also, since Magvető holds literary events every now and then, check if there is a private event on the day you are planning to visit. For an after-study program, you can go to the Synagogue since it is only 300 m from there.

Address: Budapest, Károly krt. 12, 1052
Opening hours: Mon–Sat: 7h–23h, Sun: 7h–19h
Very close to Astoria, Mon Chéri is easily accessible if you are looking for a place to study after classes. The spacious café might not look so serene from the outside, but if you go a bit further into the place, you will find the study section. There are individual tables but also a long, classical looking table (if you are a fan of the dark academia aesthetic, this is your place to go), with desk lamps and power outlets provided wherever you sit. Of course, there is also a big selection of books in the background that gives you the library vibes.

Address: Budapest, Bartók Béla út 29, 1114
Opening hours: Mon–Wed: 7:30–22:30, Thu–Fri: 7:30–23:30, Sat: 9h–23:30, Sun: 9h–21:30
If you would rather go to the Buda side, you definitely need to sit in a café on Béla Bartók Boulevard. Kelet Café is another popular choice, and while it is less on the quiet side, you can probably find a little corner for working. Anywhere you sit in this café you will be surrounded by books. Actually, according to the owner Tibor Tímár, you can “take three books if you bring three books”. Kelet has a well-established place in literary life, and there are events very frequently, however they are Hungarian. If you prefer a busier atmosphere but are also a booklover, Kelet is a must-see place. It might be worth to reserve a place in advance, especially during the weekend. After studying, you can have a refreshing walk to Feneketlen Lake.

FéSZEK (Ervin Szabó Central Library)
Address: Budapest, Szabó Ervin tér 1., 1088
FéSZEK does not have its own website but it is located inside the spectacular Ervin Szabó Central Library, a favourite place of students in Budapest. If you would like to get the feeling of what it is like to be in this famous library but do not have a library card, you can visit this café without one and then have a quick look-around in the entrance hall. (Should you want to save even more money, a few tables are usually placed in the entrance hall of the library, where people often have study sessions or private lessons.)
