The welcome awaiting Sziget’s hundreds of thousands of punters includes a bridge to the island with cracked concrete, rusty railings and a potholed pavement, Alexandra Szentkirályi, the leader of the Fidesz group in the city assembly, said in a post on Facebook on Monday.

The Fidesz politician called the “dangerous” bridge an accident waiting to happen. She noted that the bridge is owned by the capital, and Budapesters had been waiting for years for the city administration “to finally do something” about it.

But the mayor, Gergely Karácsony, had made more and more promises without actually doing anything, she said, adding that the central government “offered to replace the bridge in 2021, but the offer was rejected”.

To be a world-class capital, Szentkirályi said, required more than simply burnishing the city’s international image; it meant paying attention to basic infrastructure, too.
