From Rome to Budapest: Finding medical care abroad that feels like home

When you move abroad, you expect a few challenges: learning a new language, navigating bureaucracy, and figuring out where to find the best breakfast pastry. But few expats plan for what happens when they actually get sick.

I learned this lesson the hard way.

After leaving my small Alaskan hometown in 2021, I moved to Rome, a dream come true! I was full of excitement, not realising that renewing my residence permit would be the least of my worries. Within months, I had twisted my ankle on cobblestones and helped a dehydrated friend who had collapsed in the middle of the street. I quickly discovered that getting medical help abroad can be more complicated than we’d like to admit.

Over the years, as a travel writer living and working across Europe, I realised what I really wanted: a clinic I could trust. One that spoke my language, both literally and professionally.

Finding trust in an international clinic

That realisation hit after a trip to Egypt left me with a nasty ear infection. The local private hospital in Rome made me feel guilty for travelling and even prescribed the wrong medication. I was looking for an ENT specialist who treated me with respect and actually listened, but I couldn’t seem to find one.

Months later, after returning from India with a worrying skin rash, I reached out to FirstMed for the first time. To my surprise, FirstMed scheduled me for a same-day appointment. It turned out to be nothing serious, just some serious mosquito bites, but that visit gave me peace of mind I hadn’t realised I was missing.

That’s when I understood what makes an international, English-speaking medical clinic so valuable for expats: clarity, consistency, and comfort. When you’re sick in a foreign country, being understood matters just as much as being treated.

Why Budapest stands out

When I eventually visited Budapest, I was curious to see how FirstMed’s Hungarian clinic compared to its sister location in Rome. I expected something similar, clean, professional, and efficient. What I didn’t expect was to be completely blown away.

Located in the iconic “Swan House” building, FirstMed Budapest is as beautiful as it is functional. The architecture alone makes you feel calm before you even step inside, a refreshing contrast to the sterile hospital environments most of us dread.

The clinic spans multiple floors, offering a wide range of specialities: from general practice and paediatrics to ENT, dermatology, gynaecology, and even an in-house laboratory. There’s also a modern endoscopy centre and an optometry department equipped with the latest technology for patients’ comfort in mind. Every corner of the clinic felt bright, open, and welcoming, designed with patients in mind.
