Festival celebrating the reopening of M3 metro in Budapest
An underground festival is being organised to celebrate the reopening of the M3 metro line. On 15 and 16 June, concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, stand-up comedy and an underground playground will welcome the residents of Budapest and visitors at the renovated stations.
After five years of renovation, the Budapest Metro Line 3, also known as the Blue Line, is finally operational again. The Budapest Brand Nonprofit Zrt. highlights that the capital, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, is concluding this five-year period filled with transfers, replacement buses, escalator breakdowns with an underground festival. The event is organised by the Budapest Brand in collaboration with the Budapest Transport Company (BKV), Magyarországom writes.
Underground festival
The series of events, titled Metrófesztivál (Metro Festival), will feature several exciting programs at the renovated stations. At Nagyvárad Square station, passengers can enjoy performances by NEO, Jazzbois, Galactic Jackson, Stinky Bugs, Lelle, and Quixotic. At Corvin-negyed station, one can participate in two programs: one is by Stand-up Budapest, and another is a comedy show titled Metroast. The Kálvin Square station will feature an underground playground and a fast slide. At Deák Ferenc Square station, RadioCafé will greet participants with a live radio broadcast.
The festival will celebrate the inauguration of the metroline with various activities. Independent theatre performances will take place at Arany János Street station, featuring productions by Momentán Társulat and Baltazár SzĂnház. At Nyugati railway station, SoharĂłza choir and Budapest Ballet Grand Prix will perform. Furthermore, Barabás LĹ‘rinc will also appear with a musical performance. Last but not least, Lehel Square station will offer a historical exhibition of the metro.
A worthy celebration
Faix Csaba, CEO of Budapest Brand Zrt., emphasised that instead of ceremonial and drawn-out speeches, they have planned a worthy and extraordinary opening event for Budapest residents, as their patience during the five years of renovation deserves something special.
The press release underscores that MetrĂłfesztivál is organised in close collaboration with the BKV to ensure that the entertaining and sometimes surprising programs do not cause inconvenience to commuters, students, or those heading home. You can find further information about the event on the festival’s Facebook page.

5 years and they couldn’t be bothered for a good cleaning and general maintinence of the under pass areas- doesn’t look like much has been done in the last 40 years. The legel station has white marble walls that are so dirty they look like the never have been cleaned or maintained – maybe the should have a cleaning party- at least once every 20 years vs 40
