Lots of people lost their jobs in Hungary due to disease outbreak

The government will create an opportunity for farmers affected by the foot-and-mouth disease to receive financial support from the Wage Guarantee Fund as well, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy said on Saturday.

This will help the businesses resume farming as soon as possible after the infected animals have been destroyed and disinfection has been completed, he said. In a statement sent to MTI by his ministry, Nagy pointed out that the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak has serious economic consequences due to high contagiousness and rapid spread of the virus.

In this situation, the government is providing assistance to farmers to ease their burdens due to the loss of production and to preserve the jobs of those working at livestock farms, he said. The minister noted that damage assessment was in progress at the farm in Kisbajcs, in north-west Hungary, where the disease was first detected, as part of the compensation procedure.

The farms hit by the outbreak will receive compensation from the agricultural damage mitigation fund. The costs of eliminating the outbreak – destroying the animals, disposing of the carcasses, purchasing the necessary equipment and tools, destroying infected materials and disinfection – are covered by the state budget.
