Foreign minister: Romanian president purposely harms Hungary-Romania cooperation

The Romanian president purposely harms Hungarian-Romanian cooperation by preventing the opening of a new border crossing between the two countries, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday.

Szijjártó reacted on Facebook to a constitutional appeal submitted by Klaus Iohannis against the law on establishing a new border crossing between Kubekhaza and Baba Veche (Obeb).

“Romania’s president is unfortunately an extremely anti-Hungarian politician,” Szijjártó said.

Iohannis has been “continually involving Hungary and the Hungarian government into the Romanian election campaign”, he added.

His appeal prevents something that is equally important to Romanians and Hungarians, Szijjártó said.

The minister expressed Hungary’s continued commitment to developing bilateral relations which serve the interests of ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania and Szeklerland, too.
