Founder András Schiffer quits LMP
András Schiffer, founder and former co-leader of opposition LMP, said he has quit the party.
Schiffer, who resigned from the post of co-chair and returned his parliamentary mandate two years ago, said on Facebook on Monday that
“the last drop” triggering his decision was opposition Együtt lawmaker Szabolcs Szabó’s joining LMP’s parliamentary group.
He said he was firmly opposed to the views of “the neo-liberal” Együtt politician who strongly supports free trade which Schiffer said should be harnessed instead.
Schiffer noted that he had started “to pull out” of LMP’s politics already in September last year when the party began working with campaign advisor Ron Werber, who used to work together with the Socialist Party.
Schiffer founded the Politics Can Be Different (LMP) movement in 2008 which he formed into a party in 2009.
LMP in response thanked Schiffer for all his work for the party in a statement.
The document said that Schiffer had laid the groundwork of ecopolitics in Hungary and he had been instrumental in turning LMP into the strongest green party in the region.
“We acknowledge his decision with regret and wish him much success in the future,” LMP said.
