Revolutionary surgery at Hungarian clinic: 4-year-old deaf girl’s hearing restored

A young girl who was born deaf has now perfect hearing thanks to a revolutionary operation performed at the University of Pécs Clinical Centre (PTE KK) in southern Hungary, the university said on Tuesday.
The team of the university’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery has implanted a smart cohclea into a four-year-old girl’s ear, to replace a malfunctioning hearing aid, the Hungarian News Agency wrote.
“The operation was complex and challenging. Such operations are rare because, besides the anatomical environment of an earlier implant, the accurate placement of the electrode and the optimal stimulation of the hearing nerve also present a challenge,” the statement said.

Clinic director István Szanyi said the operation was a full success. “The smart implant will enable the patient to improve her hearing and to lead a fully life as an adult,” he said.
