Iconic Budapest garden pub closes: hotel development cuts its legacy short

Budapest bids farewell to one of its iconic cultural and social hubs, Mika Tivadar Kert, as the venue permanently closes to make way for a hotel development. The announcement, made by the operators on Friday, marks the end of a beloved gathering spot that has been integral to the city’s nightlife and community spirit for years.

A legacy cut short

Mika Tivadar Kert, located in the heart of Budapest, was originally leased for just one year. However, its popularity allowed it to continue operating well beyond its initial term. The venue was known for its vibrant atmosphere, hosting countless events and serving as a cherished meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Despite hopes to reopen for a 15th season, the operators revealed that this would no longer be possible due to the property’s transition into private hands for hotel construction.

The closure follows the earlier shutdown of Mika Tivadar Mulató in 2021. After the Mulató ceased operations, focus shifted entirely to Mika Tivadar Kert. The operators expressed their disappointment in a farewell post, stating, “We didn’t want to end this story like this and hoped to open for one more season. Unfortunately, we don’t have that opportunity anymore”.
