Free Budapest: Pest lower embankments will belong to the people from 15 March

Change language:

The Pest lower embankment running near the River Danube will be given back to pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, families going for a walk, etc. until autumn. Cars will not be able to enter the area at the weekends.

According to telex.hu, the lower embankments will belong to pedestrians each weekend and on national holidays between 15 March and 23 October. Only cars and trucks will not be able to enter the area, but people with micro-mobility devices, bicycles and pedestrians will be able to use it. The lower embankment’s opening will apply on a long section between the Margarate Bridge and Irányi Street.

The measure has become a tradition since 2020. The lower embankment has been used by pedestrians for 102 weekends. The Budapest Mayor’s Office said the measure is based on considerable and colourful civilian and professional support.

The opening is part of an agreement signed in autumn 2022 and includes 16 associations. The agreement aims to develop the Budapest embankments through cooperation with all interested sides. Last year, Budapest organised 250 programs in the framework of the Rakpart’23 event with the support of the capital, the Valyo – Város és folyó Egyesület (City and River Association) and other NGOs.

  1. Another harebrained scheme dreamed up by the globalist-socialist Mayo Greg. Look, I love the pedestrianization of the embankment. I walk there every weekend with my dog, and I was gutted when last fall when the vehicles were allowed back on. But just shutting it down without making any alternative provisions is plain dumb, albeit in keeping with the shadowy agenda to make it too stressful and unaffordable for people to drive (q.v. Agenda 2030 and 15-Minute Cities, which nobody ever voted for but which the W.E.F. et al. are hellbent on imposing on us all). By all means pedestrianize it, but ensure the thousands of vehicles that use it daily, including on weekends, have somewhere else to go WITHOUT causing a massive gridlock! Make it a permanent solution while at it, because it’s nothing short of criminal for such a beautiful river in so gorgeous a capital European city has a busy highway running along it on BOTH banks!
