Gordon Ramsay celebrates in Budapest, then things get awkward at a restaurant – video

Gordon Ramsay, arguably the world’s most famous, and unmistakably Scottish, celebrity chef, is marking his 59th birthday in Budapest. While taking a leisurely stroll through the city centre, he unexpectedly found himself in a rather curious predicament – and shared a silent video of the moment with his followers.

The star chef’s awkward encounter with his “own” restaurant

On Sunday evening, a video surfaced online showing Ramsay seated on a chair at the terrace of a Hungarian restaurant called Hungarian Hell’s Kitchen. The eatery, tucked away on Kígyó Street, sits roughly midway between Ferenciek Square and the Pest-side foot of the Elizabeth Bridge.

The reasons behind Ramsay’s visit remain something of a mystery, though Blikk was quick to point out that he himself runs a restaurant called Hell’s Kitchen. For more than two decades, since 2005, viewers across the globe have tuned in to his American reality cooking show of the same name, in which Ramsay presides, famously fiery, over aspiring chefs.

Ramsay captioned his video simply: “things you find in Budapest,” clarifying that he neither dined there nor tried the lamb sauce at this “unofficial” establishment. He remained tight-lipped, however, on whether he ventured inside or had a word with the staff. Here’s the video offering a glimpse of the encounter:

The restaurant goes by a different name in Hungarian

A quick browse through the restaurant’s website reveals that its Hungarian name isn’t “Hungarian Hell’s Kitchen” at all. Locally, it’s known as Nagy Fa-Tál Konyhája. Proudly billing itself as Budapest’s finest Hungarian-style restaurant, it boasts ingredients sourced from top local producers. The owner, chef and much of the staff hail from rural Hungary, and the atmosphere is rounded off each evening with live Romani music. Opened in 2014 after the owner relocated to the capital, the restaurant warmly invites curious diners to book a table via its website.

Gordon Ramsay celebrated at an elegant rooftop bar

According to roadster.hu, Ramsay later booked a table at St. Andrea Wine & Skybar, one of Budapest’s most refined rooftop venues overlooking Vörösmarty Square. There, he toasted his birthday with steak and a glass of red wine, soaking up the panoramic views of the square, the Budapest Eye, and St. Stephen’s Basilica.

Highly praised by Gault&Millau, the St. Andrea Wine & Skybar offers a relaxed setting for cocktails, light bar bites, and selections from the award-winning St. Andrea winery. The winery’s two Bull’s Blood vintages have even featured among the world’s top 50 wines.

A photo capturing the success – and style – of Ramsay’s evening was also shared online.
