Government-close company bought facial recognition firm from PM Orbán’s son-in-law

4iG Informatikai has signed an agreement to acquire 100pc of digital FaceKom, a company developing facial recognition softwares and dealing with digital customer identification. The previous owner of FaceKom was a private equity fund, Opportunity. The ownership of Opportunity is close to István Tiborcz, the prime minister’s son-in-law.

“FaceKom technologies create significant synergies with 4iG Group’s existing system integration, cloud, and IT security services, supporting the Group’s regional digital transformation strategy and creating further growth opportunities in the Western Balkans and in Central and Eastern Europe,” 4iG said, according to the Hungarian News Agency.

FaceKom‘s digital customer identification and video-based customer communication solutions are used by partners in the banking, insurance and public sectors. The transaction still requires regulatory approval.

Tiborcz-close private equity fund

According to 444.hu, FaceKom was originally founded by Hungarian entrepreneur Zsigmond Bodnár. Later, it came under the ownership of a private equity fund closely linked to István Tiborcz, one of Hungary’s wealthiest figures and Prime Minister Orbán’s son-in-law, who currently lives in New York with his family, including Orbán’s eldest daughter, Ráhel.

Although Tiborcz never directly owned the Opportunity fund, it shares an address with his flagship company, BDPST Ltd.—a connection uncovered and thoroughly detailed by Válasz Online in 2023.

FaceKom founded in 2011 grew rapidly during the COVID pandemic. Founder Zsigmond Bodnár highlighted its role in advancing domestic administration. Financial institutions adopted their remote digital ID software, and Idomsoft — creator of the Digital Citizen app and Ügyfélkapu+ — added selfie identification in early 2025 to simplify app registration.

Why is 4iG considered government-close?

Journalists and analysts often portray 4iG as a company closely linked to the government. Perhaps the most symbolic example of this partnership was when Gellért Jászai, the head of the group, attended last year’s meeting between Orbán and Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida — alongside the now-disgraced Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX) and Mike Waltz. Jászai also made an appearance during the recent trip to Washington, though he travelled a day ahead of the Prime Minister rather than alongside him.

Numerous articles and analyses have described Jászai as the right-hand man of Lőrinc Mészáros. Mészáros, a close friend of the Prime Minister, has emerged as the country’s wealthiest individual after winning a slew of public contracts following Orbán’s rise to power.
