Budapest (MTI) – The government commissioner in charge of public consultations on internet use has proposed reducing VAT on internet services to 18 percent and developing free Wi-Fi access in all towns and villages in the country, the commissioner Tamás Deutsch said on Friday.
Addressing the conference InternetKon held on the subject, Deutsch said he would also put forward a proposal to the government on preparing a comprehensive digital public education strategy.
Conveying the results of a public consultation on the subject, Deutsch said Hungarians had made it clear that they want the internet to be safe, accessible and affordable for everyone. It should have a larger role in education and the government should do more to develop the digital economy and public administration.
Hungarians want market equality and net neutrality, Deutsch said.
Earlier the daily Népszabadság reported that the government was considering setting up around 2,000 free Wi-Fi access points in the country, using the already existing 1,300 e-Hungary points for the project. The paper estimated the cost of the project to be between 400 million and 2 billion forints (EUR 1.28-6.4m) based on the opinion of experts.
