Government marks World Theatre Day
Budapest (MTI) – Hungary’s government greeted the nation’s theatres on World Theatre Day on Friday.
In a statement, the human resources ministry said the government has reinforced its commitment to theatrical culture and it expressed pride in Hungarian theatre, saying it has belonged to the European vanguard for the past several decades.
The government said it hoped theatres would continue to support its endeavours to make quality culture accessible to the broadest possible social strata.
The government part-finances six state-run and 29 municipally run theatres and 11 puppet theatres. In addition, about 140 registered theatrical companies have access to central support through bidding, it said.
Hungary’s theatres hold about 500 premieres and over 10,000 performances each year, attracting a total 3.5 million spectators.
World Theatre Day has been celebrated annually on March 27 since 1961.
