Green opposition: Hungary won’t become ‘battery-plant colony’

If the referendum on the government decree on priority investments launched by opposition LMP is successful, then Hungary “will be protected” against becoming “a battery-plant colony”, an official of the green party said on Wednesday, noting that the Constitutional Court has ruled that a plebiscite on priority investments can go ahead.

For this to happen, 200,000 signatures must be collected in four months, Antal Csárdi, the green party’s deputy group leader, told a press conference on Wednesday.

He insisted that the shores of Lake Balaton, Lake Ferto and other big lakes, as well as “the whole country”, would be prevented from being “sold off” if aims of the party’s initiative prevailed.

He said the decree on priority investments served the sole purpose of bypassing all existing legislation which put regulatory curbs on certain kinds of investments, so opening the way for the pursuit of projects that benefitted “Fidesz oligarchs”.

  1. So the Green Party wants batteries to be built in poor countries where it doesn’t matter what happens to the people?

  2. I agree with Erik. If the batteries are built in the Third World, Green politicians in Europe can drive their electric cars knowing that the batteries powering them were built by workers who had absolutely no health and safety protection, and the companies had to give no regard to environmental protection. The hypocrisy of the “Greens” is staggering.

  3. Green Party does not want batteries to be built in poor countries where it doesn’t matter what happens to the people. Green party wants batteries to be built in a way that it is safe and regulated for people and the environment, no matter if they are built in Hungary or anywhere else.

Currently Hungarian government is giving battery plants easy access to natural resources and does not impose strict enough regulations for environment protection. This has to be changed before the first major disaster happens, smaller ones we already have had unfortunately. How would you Erik and Falland feel if battery plant chemicals were leaking into your backyard?

Hungary should not become a battery plant colony, but a safe and responsible producer of batteries.
