Shocking accident in Hungary: grenade blew up during training; woman lost hand, forearm, soldier also injured

The Hungarian Defence Forces launched a thorough probe concerning the shocking accident that took place during the voluntary military training session for government officials near Újdörögd. They said the accidents could be caused by momentary loss of confidence or a technical problem with the device.

Lost hand and forearm, other severe injuries

According to 444.hu, the Hungarian Defence Forces held a press conference to share details about the accident that occurred on Friday at the Újdörögd training ground. Major General Zoltán Somogyi, the chief of staff of the Hungarian Defence Forces, said a government official was seriously injured in the accident while her trainer suffered minor injuries.

The accident happened during a voluntary training session for government officials. The participants were taking part in a live grenade-throwing exercise when one of the devices exploded in the hand of a government official.

The young woman suffered life-threatening injuries, losing one hand at the wrist and the other at the forearm, along with soft tissue and facial injuries. She underwent emergency surgery at the Honvéd Hospital in Budapest and is currently in a stable condition.

All grenade series will be inspected

The other injured person was a soldier, her trainer, who suffered soft tissue injuries and a bone fracture. He was taken to the Veszprém hospital in a stable condition. The accident is under examination by the police, the Győr Regional Investigative Prosecutor’s Office, and the Accident Investigation Service of the Ministry of Defence. The Defence Forces suspended the training for government officials immediately after they learned about the accident.

Somogyi said the accident could be caused by a momentary loss of confidence or a technical fault in the grenade. The defence forces launched an investigation and promised to inspect all grenade series.
