The opposition Democratic Coalition has filed a complaint to the police, alleging that Chinese ventilators procured by the government and then auctioned off had resulted in damages to the state of more than 300 billion forints.
DK discovered that not a single ventilator has been used or sold since 2020, after having successfully sued for the relevant data to be publicised, Zoltan Varga, a party MP, told an online press briefing on Saturday.
Varga said that in his capacity as head of parliament’s welfare committee, he had visited the warehouse where ventilators had been kept for the past four years.
He insisted that “the elite” close to the ruling Fidesz party had got rich thanks to the state procurement of “overpriced Chinese ventilators, while tens of thousands of Hungarian people lost their lives” during the Covid pandemic.
Viktor Orbán’s government ripped off Hungarian taxpayers twice by paying over the odds for the machines and then paying for their storage before auctioning them off, he insisted.

Sad. Having personally used Hungarian public health care a lot and stayed in public hospitals as an inpatient, I have witnessed the sad state Hungarian public hospital premises are. It is really infuriating that government corruptions leads into ever declining public health care as they are literally stealing money from the poor and sick citizens. As if the government wants all the sick citizens to rather die away than get well. Maybe that is a government strategy to save money – let the sick die rather than spend money on taking care of sick citizens properly.
Despite free public health care offered for everyone in Hungary, private health care insurances are popular in Hungary for those who can afford it. And we all know the reason for it – the decline of public health care during the Fidesz government ruling.
Useless overpriced Chinese ventilators and grossly inferior Sputnik Russian vaccine for the masses that was never approved for use by the WHO. Fidesz makes business deals with Russia and China because they have no problems giving kickbacks to the Fidesz elite. They couldn’t care less if what they are buying actually works as long as someone in their circle can make money off it. In the case of the ventilators and inferior vaccine it cost the lives of thousands of Hungarians to get their kickback money. The irony is that one of the two Nobel prize winning scientists that developed the superior MRNA vaccine used by Pfizer and Moderna is Hungarian but Orban offered most people Russian vaccine instead.
I should add that Hungarians of course were also given the option of also inferior Chinese vaccine.
