Human remains found by young boy in Hungarian town: locals outraged

Residents of Hajdúsámson were stunned to learn that human remains had once again been discovered on the grounds of a former cemetery. The vacant lot on Jókai Street, which has been uninhabited for years, once served as a Calvinist graveyard. Although the graves were officially exhumed more than a decade ago, locals say this latest incident proves the process was not thorough.

Open, neglected lot in the city centre

According to reports from RTL Híradó and HAON, the bones were discovered on Wednesday by a young boy on the unfenced property located in the heart of the city. Deputy Mayor Gábor Murguly said this isn’t the first time human remains have been found at the site: similar discoveries have previously been made by children and dog walkers.

The lot is currently privately owned but has been left overgrown and in disrepair. “This is a dangerous and unacceptable situation from both a public health and a respect-for-the-dead standpoint,” the deputy mayor warned, adding that the city has issued a formal notice to the owner to fence off the property.

Residential complex planned for the site

The property owner stated that until 2016, the land belonged to the Reformed Church, which carried out the exhumations in 2009. The developer plans to build a residential complex on the lot, but claims the project has been stalled for years due to the municipality’s failure to provide necessary utility infrastructure.

The owner added that work currently is limited to removing sand from the site, and without utility access, construction cannot continue. Locals, however, are outraged: many view the situation as morbid, with some suggesting that mistakes were made during the original exhumation process.

No official action required

Experts from the government office have collected the unearthed bones and have stated there is no need for official or public health intervention. However, city officials continue to push for the site to be secured.
