Hundreds of people died on Hungary’s roads this year
More than 200 people died in road accidents in the first half of this year, the national police headquarters (ORFK) said on Saturday on police.hu.
A total of 6,383 accidents involved injury, including 193 in which there were 211 fatalities, the police said. The main causes of accidents were speeding (27 percent), neglecting to give the right of way (26 percent) and violating traffic rules on making turns (15 percent), they added. In THIS article you can check out a disturbing video about a horror acident on Budapest’s Árpád bridge killing a 26-year-old innocent cyclist.
As someone who recently moved to Budapest from England, this news is hardly surprising. Too many drive like lunatics on the highways. The problem is not the speeds per se, but the absence of any sensible braking distance. Government should persuade insurance companies to offer cheaper insurance to those with rear dash cams, problem will soon go away
I can only agree with Craig. Living here many years its always crazy how Hungarian drivers have so little patience on the roads and are ready to risk their and others lives to save a minute or two of driving time. Driving high speed and keeping only few meters distance to the car in front of you so they can quickly take over as soon as possible, sometimes even when its not possible and I have to use breaks to let some lunatic driver pass me before the driver collides with oncoming traffic. And I do drive accordind to the speed limits just as fast as it is legally allowed. There should be much more strict traffic control and heavy fines.
