Great news! Hungarian destination among best hidden gems in Europe
A Hungarian destination has made it onto the list of Best Hidden Gems in Europe for 2024. This highlights that, in addition to our largest lake, Balaton, there are many other places worth visiting in Hungary.
As Femina reports, Lake Bokodi has been selected as one of the hidden gems in Europe worth visiting in 2024. The list was compiled by European Best Destinations, one of the most popular travel sites among travellers and professionals. It features the “most incredible secret destinations and the most beautiful hidden gems in Europe.” Besides the Hungarian lake, it includes destinations such as Naantali in Finland, Pico Island and its volcano in the Azores, the colourful villages of Villajoyosa in Spain and 14 more.

These European wonders are not yet widely known, so according to the site, visitors can enjoy a relaxing holiday. Especially those who dislike crowded places will appreciate its tranquil beauty, Femina adds. The “magnificent floating village,” as the site describes it, is only a few kilometres from Budapest, two hours by public transport. “It is a timeless place, peaceful and welcoming, and is a worthwhile escape during your stay in Hungary.” They also note that while some chalets are private properties, others are open to visitors, offering free drinks and access to a roof terrace with a view of the lake.
According to termálfürdÅ‘.hu, it is one of the most unique places in Hungary. Located next to Oroszlány, the lake was created in 1961 for the thermal power plant in Oroszlány, with one part of the lake cooling the facility while the other absorbed excess heat. Since the lake didn’t freeze even in winter, it became very attractive for anglers, as fishing was possible even on frosty days. Thus, a beautiful fishing paradise has emerged around the lake. They add that accessing the lake is not easy, as the piers and floating houses are connected by dirt roads surrounded by dense forest.
The question arises: how long can these hidden gems in Europe remain hidden after being included in a list published on a popular website? It is important to know that the fishing houses of the floating village of Bokod are privately owned. Visitors are advised to behave discreetly and respectfully during their visit, as the locals are not fond of large groups of tourists, who can be noisy and disrespectful of their privacy.
