Hungarian economy minister holds talks with World Bank Group executive director

Finance Minister Mihály Varga on Monday held talks with Guenther Schoenleitner, an executive director at the Board of the World Bank Group, discussing ways the World Bank can help Hungarian companies expand onto the international market.

The Hungarian government has made it a strategic goal to help boost the export capabilities of small and medium-sized companies, the finance ministry quoted Varga as saying at the talks.

The government is doing everything it can to ensure that more and more Hungarian companies can take part in the World Bank Group’s various tenders, Varga said.

Hungarian firms have participated in nearly 40 projects launched by the bank in recent years, winning contracts worth over a total of 50 million dollars, he added.

The minister expressed support for the World Bank‘s development goals in countries affected by migration and poverty, noting that this approach was in line with Hungary’s policy of tackling problems locally.

Varga and Schoenleitner also discussed the World Water Summit to be held in Budapest this autumn.

They agreed that the World Bank could play a key role in projects related to sustainable development.
