Hungarian film Son of Saul wins Grand Prix at Cannes

Cannes (MTI) – Hungarian film “Son of Saul” won the Grand Prix, the silver prize at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, it was announced at the closing ceremony on Sunday.

Directed by Laszlo Nemes Jeles, “Son of Saul” takes place at the Auschwitz concentration camp and tells the story of the final day-and-a-half in the life of Saul Auslaunder, a fictional Jewish member of the death camp’s Sonderkommando charged with aiding with the disposal of gas chamber victims.

The film has also won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) prize at the Cannes film festival.

The last time for a Hungarian film to win the jury prize in Cannes was in 1985. It was Colonel Redl directed by Istvan Szabo.
