Hungarian FM Szijjártó discusses bilateral issues with Slovak counterpart
Construction of a new bridge over the River Danube connecting Komárom and Komarno is set to continue with the project expected to be completed around late summer or early autumn, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said after talks with his new Slovak counterpart on Wednesday.
In a Facebook entry, Szijjártó said he and Ivan Korcok thanked each other for their governments’ mutual assistance in the repatriation of Hungarian and Slovak citizens.
Slovakia has helped 89 Hungarians return home, while Hungary has assisted the repatriation of 24 Slovak nationals who had been stranded abroad due to travel restrictions imposed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the minister said.
Szijjártó said he and Korcok had assured one another that their governments will uphold the unimpeded movement of goods across the border, noting that bilateral trade turnover between the two countries had exceeded 10 billion euros last year.
He said the two of them had agreed that the construction of the new bridge over the River Danube connecting Komárom and Komarno would continue as planned.
In line with prior agreements and plans, the two countries will connect their electricity grids at two points and significantly increase the capacity of the Hungary–Slovakia gas interconnector, Szijjártó said.
