Hungarian foreign minister about Ukraine’s positive discrimination

Georgia has made significant progress in fulfilling the requirements for an EU membership candidacy, and Hungary sees no obstacles for the country to receive the status in the autumn, the foreign minister said on Facebook on Friday, after talks with his Georgian counterpart, Ilia Darchiashvili.

In talks over the phone, Szijjártó and Darchiashvili reviewed the European Commission’s interim report on Georgia’s progress. Last week saw talks of the European Union integration of the Western Balkans, but “we have other friends waiting to be allowed in,” Péter Szijjártó said in a Facebook post.

The EU has treated Georgia unfairly when it didn’t award it the candidate status alongside with Moldova and Ukraine, he said. “Georgia is not in any worse shape than the other two countries,” he said. Hungary has since constantly been helping Georgia in fulfilling the requirements, he said. Hungary hopes that the EC or member states will not employ double standards against Georgia, Szijjártó siad.
