Hungarian international airport to close to traffic – UPDATED: multiple flights cancelled

Debrecen Airport, in the east of Hungary, will close from 30 June until 3 July for preventative maintenance on its runway, the international airport told MTI.

High temperatures over the Pentecost weekend caused damage to the runway similar to that experienced in the summer of 2024.

UPDATE: Multiple flights cancelled

According to haon.hu, a local news outlet, multiple flights have been cancelled due to the preventative runway maintenance. On 1 July, the following flights will neither take off from nor land at the airport:

  • Smartwings: Monastir–Debrecen and Debrecen–Monastir
  • Freebird: Antalya–Debrecen and Debrecen–Antalya
  • Wizz Air: London Luton–Debrecen and Debrecen–London Luton
  • Wizz Air: Larnaca–Debrecen and Debrecen–Larnaca

On 2 July, passengers will not be able to travel on the following flights:

  • MGA: Antalya–Debrecen and Debrecen–Antalya
  • Lufthansa: Munich–Debrecen and Debrecen–Munich

According to the news outlet, a similar maintenance project last year halted airport operations for several days due to a heatwave that damaged the runway surface. The airport’s operator added that their most crucial task was to guarantee passenger safety, so preventative maintenance is inevitable in this case. During the project, experts will conduct thorough inspections and undertake necessary refurbishments to ensure the airport consistently delivers the highest standard of service to its passengers.

The airport’s operator chose early July to minimise the number of flights affected, as the heatwave during the Pentecost weekend had foreshadowed similar problems with the runway as those experienced last summer.
