This stunning Hungarian location was ranked among the most beautiful in the world

What qualifies as the most beautiful place in the world? This is a subjective question, as beauty means something different to everyone. Despite this, TimeOut magazine attempted to compile a ranking. Based on votes from international travel journalists, they selected the world’s most breathtaking landscapes—and among them, a remarkable Hungarian destination earned an esteemed spot.

A Hungarian location among the world’s most beautiful

The top spot on the list went to Komodo National Park in Indonesia, where pink sandy beaches, emerald-green hills, and the famous Komodo dragons create an exotic landscape. Second place was awarded to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls in Africa, which cascades with immense power, showcasing nature’s untamed energy. The third position was claimed by Bhutan’s Punakha Valley, a spiritual haven nestled among the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, featuring hidden monasteries, rice fields, and rivers.

In this prestigious company, Hungary’s Lillafüred secured 12th place.

Nestled within the Bükk Mountains, this small town stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for its architectural treasures and unique atmosphere, Lelépő writes. The neo-Renaissance Palotaszálló (Palace Hotel) rising above Lake Hámori, waterfalls, romantic hanging gardens, and crystal-clear mountain air all contribute to an experience that rejuvenates both body and soul.

Lillafüred’s multifaceted appeal

Lillafüred offers wonders beyond its surface. Visitors can explore the Saint Stephen Cave (Szent István-barlang), where stalactite formations and a unique microclimate provide an extraordinary experience—complete with sound bowl relaxation programs. The Anna Cave (Anna-barlang) is another rare attraction; its limestone formations preserve fossilised plant remains that are globally unique.

For those seeking adventure, there is the legendary “Rock” (Szikla), which has transformed from a former military shelter into a nightclub and now serves as a site for urban exploration tours. The surrounding area also boasts additional attractions: the Szeleta Park Visitor Centre near Miskolc offers insights into prehistoric human life, while the Bükk Star Observatory near Répáshuta guides visitors through the mysteries of the starry sky with interactive scientific experiences.

More than just a scenic destination

Lillafüred is far more than a picturesque getaway—it is a magical place where every generation can discover its own wonders. From nature lovers to history enthusiasts and adventure seekers, this Hungarian gem offers something for everyone.

  1. I’ve been going there since the 70s. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and is a magnet for foreign tourists. I have always loved the drive through the Bukk and have tried a couple trails spotting herds of deer and wild boar which should be given a lot of distance. It’s a good combination with sightseeing in Eger.
