Dune: Prophecy features a Hungarian location
As Turizmus reports, the cave dwellings of Noszvaj have garnered significant attention as the setting for the Harkonnen house in the second episode of the Dune: Prophecy series. Viewers worldwide were reportedly astonished by the stunning visuals, which showcased the unique architecture of these cave homes. The series, available on Max in Hungary, features notable performances by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams in their roles as Valya and Tula Harkonnen. Set 10,000 years before the original Dune narrative, the prequel explores the rise to power of these two sisters and their pivotal role in the formation of the Bene Gesserit.
About the cave dwellings
The Farkaskő or Pocem cave dwellings, situated on the southeastern border of Noszvaj, serve as the fictional residence for Valya Harkonnen’s family within the series. While the narrative portrays a family with a dubious reputation for whale tuff processing on a frigid planet named Lankiveil, in reality, these caves are part of the Gyulakeszi Riolite Tuff Formation—an extraordinary geological site approximately 20-19 million years old. This unique sight has captivated audiences, leaving many wanting to visit Hungary to experience the breathtaking landscapes featured in their favourite show. The portrayal of this Hungarian terrain has left viewers raving about its beauty, and we can really understand why. Bükk-vidék Geopark writes:
For centuries, the people of Bükkkalja have carved cave dwellings, wine cellars, hiding places and other, mainly economic, spaces in this rock, which is part of the Bükkkalja Stone Culture, which has been a Hungarikum since 2013 and a cultural and historical value of the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Bükk Region since 2024.
