Hungarian minister receives international human rights award
Berlin, December 14 (MTI) – Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog received the Dr Rainer Hildebrandt Medal, one of the most prestigious international human rights awards, on Wednesday.
At a ceremony in Berlin, the medal was also granted posthumously to Pal Maleter, a defence minister in the government of Imre Nagy who was executed after Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.
Balog was recognised for his work for the social inclusion of the Roma and his efforts in 1989 offering spiritual support to Germans who escaped from the German Democratic Republic.
The award is given annually in recognition of extraordinary, non-violent commitment to human rights and is conferred on the birthday of Hildebrandt to mark International Human Rights Day.
