Hungarian Photographer as the Most Popular Artist of the Paris Photo Fair
André Kertész, one of the most influental photographers of the 20th century, was the ”star” of the Paris Photo Fair. His works displayed on the auction were sold for more than 165 000 Euros, becoming the most expensive items of the fair, index.hu reports.
Artcurial, the French auction house had offered a collection, consisting of 99 of the artist’s works for sale, 70% of which was sold on the fair. The photos were mostly original prints, marked with the original signature of André Kertész. The most expensive photographies were the ones that had been taken in Paris, a photo of Piet mondrian’s glasses and pipe was sold for 13 000 Euros, the photo titled ’Chez Mondrian’ was purchased for 7540 Euros, while a a picture taken at the Garden of Tuileries, in 1927, was sold for 6098 Euros.
André Kertész was born in Hungary in 1894 in wealthy Jewish family. He started taking pictures as a teenager, and his photos taken in the first world war are known as works of historical significance. In 1925 he moved to Paris, and used his camera on the streets, capturing everyday situations. He later became the chronicler of the avantgarde movement in Paris. He moved to New York and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. André Kertész died in 1985, bestowing 120 photos of his oeuvre on André Kertész Memorial House, in Szigetbecse, Hungary.
