Hungarian winner at the Cannes Film Festival

Nadja Andrasev won a joint 3^rd prize for her animated short film The Noise of Licking at the 69^th Cannes Film Festival, vs.hu reports. The Cinefondation programme awards the best works submitted by film students.

Out of the 2300 works submitted to the programme 18 diploma projects were chosen. Among the nominees were 14 live action and 4 animated films, from which the international jury, headed by Naomi Kawase Japanese director, decided on the winners.

The Hungarian animated short film shares the 3^rd place with the Venezuelan Michael Labarca. The 1^st prize was awarded to the Israeli Or Sinai for her short film Anna, while the 2^nd place was taken by the British Hamid Ahmadi for his work In the Hills.

After seeing the other contestants, many of which became her favourite, Nadja Andrasev did not expect to win a prize. She thought that the jury would favour live action films, or films with a deeper social message to her work, which has a more personal tone to it, she says. However, before the award ceremony, one of the organiser recommended that she took her place closer to the side of the row, suggesting that she might be called on stage.

The nine-minute digital animation was based on the short story Forgiveness by Ádám Bodor. Andrasev was captured by the absurdity and the mood of the story, which inspired her to create a surreal, fairytale-like world.

The nine-minute short film features a woman who is taking care of her exotic plants, while the neighbour’s cat is watching her every day. Their perverse game escalates, then one day the cat disappears. Next spring a mysterious guest arrives…

The Hungarian diploma project was made at the animation department of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME Anim), with the support of the Hungarian National Film Fund. It was produced by József Fülöp, edited by Judit Czakó, and the sound designer was Péter Benjámin Lukács. Following the premier in Cannes, the film is to compete at the Annecy Film Festival, the most important international event for animated films.

Nadja Andrasev earned her master’s degree in animation at MOME, then participated in the Animation Sans Frontiéres international animation workshop. She is currently preparing her next film, while working on animated films as a production manager.
