Hungary and Azerbaijan team up: New universities, scholarships, and even Attila the Hun exhibit!

Universities in Hungary and Azerbaijan will strive to build closer cooperation, the minister of culture and innovation said on Wednesday after talks with the education minister of Azerbaijan in Baku on Wednesday.

BalΓ‘zs HankΓ³ added that the two countries were also preparing to implement joint cultural projects.

Concerning the details, the minister said that Hungary’s GΓΆdΓΆllΕ‘ University of Agriculture and Life Sciences would open an agricultural faculty in Azerbaijan, while Budapest’s Technical University (BME) was preparing to launch cooperative projects with that country.

Currently, there are over 660 Azeri students studying at Hungarian universities, HankΓ³ said, adding that preparations were underway to ensure that Hungarians could study at universities in Azerbaijan by way of a scholarship programme. The programme, he added, would facilitate studies in agriculture, engineering, IT, technology and economics, which he said could contribute to the development of bilateral economic ties.

The minister said he was in talks with leaders of Azerbaijan’s State Oil Industry University and those of the Baku State University.

During his talks, HankΓ³ signed a three-year agreement on cultural cooperation, including Azerbaijan’s lending objects to a planned exhibition on Attila the Hun at Budapest’s National Museum, opening in January 2026.

Meanwhile, the minister said Budapest’s Metropolitan Circus was helping its Azeri counterpart with a refurbishment project, and noted that the two countries were planning on cooperation in the film industry, too.
