Hungary offers refugees many opportunities
As of May, Ukrainians applying for asylum can easily find work in various shortage occupations. If certain conditions are met, the state will also provide support to the employers. The level of support depends on several factors. The abolition of the permit requirement already puts refugees in a much more advantageous position. It will allow them to find work more quickly. Even dual nationals can benefit from the support.
Finding work in Hungary
The Russian occupation of Ukraine has been going on for almost three months. As a result, masses of people are leaving Ukraine. Many of them are heading to neighbouring Hungary, thinking that it will be easier to return home from there when the war ends.
The EU obliges its member states to provide temporary protection for refugees who flee their countries.
In addition, the Hungarian scheme also makes it easier for refugees to claim refugee status when they want to find employment. This is according to a statement from the Hungarian law firm Baker McKenzie, which provides legal assistance to Ukrainians arriving in Hungary.
In some shortage occupations, there are already different rules for workers coming from the neighbouring country.
In principle, this makes it easier for Ukrainian citizens to find work. From 1 May, this rule will apply to all jobs. Those who apply for asylum in Hungary will be entitled to work without a work permit.
Plenty of support
Employers can even apply for support to employ refugees.
Previously, this was only available if the person arrived in Hungary after the outbreak of the war. Now it also applies to dual nationals and asylum seekers who arrived before the outbreak of the war, napi.hu reports.
Employers must have a place of residence if they want to benefit from the support. In addition, it is important that the company cannot be under winding-up proceedings.
Employers can also receive support to cover housing and travel expenses for refugees who are employed for at least 20 hours.
Those who arrived prior to the war will receive up to HUF 30,000 (EUR 77.14) per person, while those arriving after the outbreak will receive double this amount. The allowance is payable for the duration of the employment, and for a maximum of one year. However, it can be extended for a further twelve months at the employer’s request, pestisrĂ¡cok.hu reports.
