Hungary-UAE cooperation: Space, defence, telecoms and cheese!

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó met with the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of Foreign Trade Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi in Budapest on Monday.

In a statement issued by his ministry, Szijjártó said cooperation between Hungary and the UAE was expanding to new areas: the space industry, defence and telecommunications. At a joint press conference after the meeting, he said the sides had discussed the implementation of recently signed economic agreements.

Szijjártó noted that bilateral trade had reached half a billion dollars in 2024 and was set to climb further in 2025. Hungary has exported over 1,000 tonnes of cheese and more than 15 tonnes of pharmaceuticals this year, and a Hungarian company is providing digital services at UAE festivals, he added.

He said Hungary’s Wizz Air had relaunched a flight to the UAE a week earlier, bringing the number of direct flights from Budapest to 20 a week.

Szijjártó welcomed the UAE’s participation in the Abraham Accords, its good ties with the United States and its integration with the BRICS group. He added that Hungary fully backed a free trade agreement and a strategic partnership agreement being negotiated by the European Union and the UAE.
